Having to innovate for profit only means we have an economic incentive for easy money which generally leads to single use plastic widgets.

If governments and philanthropists focused on funding the innovation to solve our challenges and then let the market focus on production we could really see the shifts we need. The CSIRO is a great model of this in action.
